Socialism has never worked in any country where it has ever been tried. Socialism always leads to economic ruin, wholesale poverty and dependence on the government instead of one's own work and self-effort.
Why does this happen? Socialism purports to be an economic and governmental system that eliminates all of the negative aspects of man's nature such as greed and selfishness, and causes those most talented and intelligent to serve the needs of the people, instead of their own self-interest. One would think that such a system could be made to work, but it never does. Instead, it sometimes leads to the worst forms of tyranny and cruelty.
The basic reason why Socialism does not work is because it is a wholly materialistic, atheistic system that exists in a state of rebellion against God's rules. The central question in the entire history of man is this: Does God exist? The whole history and destiny of mankind rests on this one question. The fact that this is the central question of the human race tends to be, in-itself, an evidence that God exists. Otherwise, why would this be the central question? Why is it that in all of human history, systems organized around a faith in God tend to be constructive; whereas systems organized around an atheistic belief system tend to be destructive? In modern times, the free enterprise system, which is organized around God's rules, has proven to be very successful in creating the most prosperity. Communism, an atheistic system, has proven to be very destructive to prosperity. Republican government, at least in America, organized around God's rules, has tended to be constructive. Fascism, an atheistic system, has tended to be very destructive. Incidentally, Fascism is a socialist system not a free enterprise one.
Socialism does not work because it stands against the way that God has organized His world. God has determined that some people should be very talented and/or very intelligent, and that they should personally benefit from their abilities. God blesses some people with riches, and allows others to be poor. To have faith in God is to believe that He has good reasons for doing it this way. One of these reasons seems to be that the free enterprise system allows the talented and hard-working to sometimes succeed. This process produces a pool of wealth from which working people can draw, thus producing the most prosperity for the most people.
Greed can certainly be a very selfish and sinful practice. Greed, and its systems, can be destructive. Yet, God can take even the most negative aspects of man's nature and use them in systems that produce many good and creative effects. For example, greed can cause a man to take some cruel actions against his workers or competitors, and yet his system can still produce prosperity for a lot of people.
Socialism cannot work because it ignores, and even encourages, many of the negative aspects of man's nature. Do humans become better people because they live under socialism? History proves otherwise. Socialism encourages apathy. That which socialism fails to produce because of this apathy, the underground capitalist will. Socialism destroys incentive. It destroys the very spirit of its people.
In John 12:3-8, Jesus rebuked the socialist, Judas Iscariot, over these very questions. Judas wanted Mary's ointment to be sold and the wealth of it given to the poor. He desired this godless system even though he had not dealt with the greed in his own heart. Jesus gently rebuked him by pointing out that Mary had poured the ointment on His feet as an act of personal devotion. Jesus further taught that God has allowed the poor to remain in the world so that the righteous might be blessed by helping them through personal charity. True love can only be shown in personal ways, and not through impersonal systems. Jesus then implied that Judas had better believe in Him while He is around because the day would soon come when Judas would see Him no more.
In Mark 14:3-9, Jesus added the gospel to His teachings. Jesus pointed out that Mary's act of love and devotion was indicative of His own act of love and devotion for a sinful race when He would lay down His own life on a cruel cross to die in man's place in order to save him from his sins. Jesus poured out His blood on the cross to wash away man's sins, and save him from hell and death. Only through faith in the death, burial and resurrection of Christ can the hearts of men be changed for the good.
